Evolution and adaptation
In Science, the children learnt about evolution and adaptation. In Art, we looked at photographs of apes, chimpanzees and monkeys and discussed how their features differed or were similar. The children then chose an image of a primate and using pencils they made a detailed drawing in their sketchbook. This was a sustained piece of work over a couple of sessions.
For their final piece, the children were tasked with creating an A3 mixed media artwork of a primate. This was planned in sketchbooks and children explored various media, experimenting until they found which media worked well together. Children chose from pencil, charcoal, watercolour paints and pencils, crayons, chalk pastels, oil pastels and graphite pencils. Some children chose to feature their primate against an abstract background, others chose to include natural surroundings in their work.
